To make sure dangerous goods stay safe during transportation, they need to be shipped in the right kind of containers. These containers, called means of containment, can be:
- Boxes
- Cans
- Drums
- Jerricans
- Pails
- Bags
- Crates
- Cylinders
These containers must meet specific rules:
- They must be allowed under the TDG regulations
- They must meet safety standards
- They should be suitable and safe for the type of dangerous goods inside
- They must be properly made, filled, and sealed to prevent any spills or leaks
- They must be kept in good condition and follow safety standards
For some classes of dangerous goods (Classes 3, 4, 5, 6.1, 8, and 9), the packages must meet UN specifications. These packages have a special mark that shows:
- What type of package it is
- What material the package is made of
- The Packing Group it's approved for
- The maximum weight it can hold safely
